What Are The Most Sought-after House Designs

If you’re trying to build or buy a home, you’re in for a lot of paperwork and a lot of decision making. One of the most elusive ones is actually a decision you would have to live with the longest. What kind of design you want for your home is pretty hard to change once you’ve settled on one, unless you’re willing to remodel completely. Also have in mind that it’s not only about what’s trendy right now, but also about what’s going to age well in the years (or decades) to come.

Here’re a couple of designs that are especially interesting:

Cottage style

This style is mostly recognizable by a large front porch. The houses are a bit smaller and have a 1920s vibe about them. Cottage homes are usually described as cozy and rustic, which may lead people to believe that they’re too small and crowded. This definitely isn’t the case, because that sense of warmth can be accomplished without losing any of the modern-day comforts. Materials used in making these homes are mostly natural – meaning wood, brick and stone, which is great for those with environmentalist concerns.

Mediterranean style

Mediterranean style homes are reminiscent of Italian, France and Spanish influences. They often have a red low pitched roof and are very focused on patios, verandas and other outdoor extensions. Usually finished in stucco – these homes have few details on the facade. Columns, arched windows and wrought-iron balconies are also a common touch. The rooms are large and floor plans are open, which allows for easy circulation (and therefore a lot of options for decorating). Elaborate gardens, back yards, or pools also accompany homes designed in this style.

Modern style

The modern style originated in the 50s and the 60s and is characterized by large horizontal windows and flat or roofs with a lower slope. These homes are an extension of a horizontal landscape and a culture that places a lot of emphasis on automobiles, transport and being connected to the world. Such homes are extremely popular in New Zealand, Australia, USA and the rest of the countries that belong to the Anglosphere. So nowadays it’s easy to find reliable home builders in South Australia that can create a modern, slick and futuristic home that is also kid-friendly and family-oriented. This is why more and more families are opting for such a type of home: living in a modern space can give an individual or a family a certain sense of security and safety.

Craftsman style

This style has become popular during the industrial revolution as a response to it made by the craftsmen and artisans. Mass production has changed architecture (as well as all other aspects of life) and craftsmen have tried to make themselves indispensable, by creating elaborate and unique work. Craftsman style homes feature open porches and overhanging beams. They use natural materials – mostly stone, timbercrete and wood with a lot of ornaments. The roofs are low pitched and there’s a great emphasis on being connected with the environment.

Farmhouse style

Farmhouse style homes are obviously based on farms, but now they can be found all over the country including the urban areas as well. The basic design goes back to the 19th century, with tall narrow windows, metal roofs, and large porches (sometimes on both front and back of the house). Floor plans are organized around a large kitchen and they’re both practical and informal (which means that you will be able to change the purpose of most rooms if you need to). For those who love to spend time outdoors and have a big garden, then a farmhouse will be a great solution as it offers so much without taking away any style.

Choose the style that suits your needs, your esthetics, and ongoing trends. Just have in mind that you will probably live in a house for a significant time, so be sure to think things through before you make a decision. If you feel skilled enough or you know someone who knows their way around home design, you can even mix some of these styles, but be sure to focus on functionality and comfort. Being creative and discovering new things will surely help you create your perfect, original, and comfortable home.
